Courtney J. Bolstad, PhD, DBSM
About me
I am a licensed clinical psychologist in the state of Alabama (#2344) and hold the Diplomate in Behavioral Sleep Medicine (DBSM) credential from the Board of Behavioral Sleep Medicine. I have been practicing behavioral sleep medicine across various settings and patient populations since 2019 and have provided clinical consultation to clinicians implementing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Nightmares since 2023. I am an active member of the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine and served on their Clinical Practice Committee from 2020 to 2024.
I was born and raised in Minnesota, but I fell in love with the Deep South during my graduate training at Mississippi State University. I completed my doctoral internship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham - Birmingham VA Medical Center Consortium (VA Track) and planned to make Alabama home. Prior to planting roots in Alabama, I completed a clinical geropsychology fellowship at the South Texas Veterans Health Care System in San Antonio, TX in order to specialize in working with older adults. I am currently employed by the Birmingham VA Health Care System as a psychologist for their Home-Based Primary Care team serving the Huntsville area.
Outside of my clinical endeavors, I conduct research on geropsychology and behavioral sleep medicine, particularly the study and treatment of nightmares and other parasomnias. I have over 25 peer-reviewed publications, most of which are in the field of sleep medicine. My work has been recognized by the Society of Behavioral Sleep Medicine, the International Society for Anthrozoology, and the International Association for the Study of Dreams.
